Contributions

When you’re an active member, you pay a percentage of your salary into the pension scheme each month.

Your payments build your future pension and give you valuable benefits like life cover and protection if you can’t work because of illness.

Your employer also pays in, and their contribution is much bigger than yours. This means your LGPS membership is worth far more than just what you pay.

How much it costs you depends on how much you're paid, but it'll be between 5.5% and 11.2% of your pensionable pay. The contribution will be defined by your employer and reviewed annually.

How your rate is worked out
What your employer pays

The rate you pay will depend on the level of your pensionable pay - you can see the rates here.

The real cost to you will be less because you don’t pay tax on the amount you contribute into your pension.

If you work part time or term time your contribution rate will be based on your actual pay.

While you pay between about 5.5% and 12.5%, your employer usually pays around 20% or more of your salary into the scheme.

This covers:

  • Your future pension
  • Life cover and ill-health protection

The contributions paid by yourself and your employer are not included in the calculation of your benefits. The LGPS (Scotland) is a defined benefit pension scheme. Please refer to "How your pension builds up" for further information.
