Rejoining the Fund

If you previously left LPF with deferred pension benefits and now return to eligible local government employment, you’ll start building new benefits – but your old savings don’t disappear. Here’s what happens:

What happens when you rejoin?

  • Your deferred benefits will normally automatically merge with your new active pension account, so your total LGPS benefits continue building
  • If you prefer to keep your two pension pots separate, you can do so, but only if you make that decision within 12 months of rejoining, or within a longer period if your employer allows
  • If you have more than one active job with LGPS membership, you’ll be able to choose which account your deferred benefits should be merged with
  • If your deferred benefits were built before 1 April 2015, they’ll still be calculated under final salary rules, even after being merged with your new active pension account.

How to make your decision:

1. If you’d like to keep your deferred benefits separate, let your employer or LPF know within 12 months of rejoining the LGPS.
2. If you prefer your benefits combined, no action is needed – everything will merge automatically.
3. If you’re unsure which path to choose, use My Pension Online to view both your active and deferred pension values. You might also consider talking to a financial adviser before deciding.
