State Pension

Your LGPS pension is separate from the State Pension, which the UK Government provides. Many pensioners will receive both.

The new State Pension:

  • From 6 April 2016, a single-tier State Pension replaced the old system. It applies to men born on or after 6 April 1951 and women born on or after 6 April 1953
  • Your benefit amount is based on your National Insurance contributions
  • You can check your entitlement and State Pension age on the Government’s website

Contracted Out Pension Equivalent (COPE)

Many LGPS members were previously “contracted out” of the additional State Pension. While contracted out, you and your employer paid lower National Insurance contributions. In return, LGPS provided you with a Guaranteed Minimum Pension (GMP). The Government calculates a Contracted-Out Pension Equivalent (COPE) to reflect this.

COPE does not mean you receive an additional payment – it represents the value already being provided by your LGPS benefits.
